Snowmass, Aspen's sister ski resort, offers a peaceful alternative to Aspen's glitz and glamour with lots of ski-in/ski-out resorts located right on the slopes. Snowmass's ski resorts, started in the late sixties, have gained stature with age. If your thoughts of a ski vacation include fine dining and a lively apres-ski scene within a serene and tranquil atmosphere, Snowmass is calling.
The always-entertaining Friday afternoon show is entering its 12th year at Snowmass. Big Air Fridays attracts competitors from near and far (including the occasional vacationer) to show off what they’ve been practicing all week. Athletes will showcase the newest and most progressive tricks around off of the 40-foot jump on upper Fanny Hill. Don’t miss the new Little Air competition, inviting kids to come out and compete for giveaways on a mini-jump just before Big Air Fridays.
If freeing your heel and dropping that knee are a part of your turn, you’ve come to the right place. Snowmass Village offers excellent terrain for telemark skiers, from perfectly groomed corduroy for those just learning, to open powder glades perfect for bouncing down the mountain from one turn to the next. Nearby huts, trails, and yurts make this a prime destination for telemarkers looking for some extended adventure, although backcountry travel is never recommended for non-experts and without knowledge of current conditions. Telemark boots and bindings are available at many rental shops and those looking to learn can take a lesson while in town.
Elk Camp Ullr Friday Nights
The Aspen/Snowmass Nordic roots ring true every Friday night during the winter season. In honor of the Norse God of Snow, Ullr, Elk Camp at Snowmass is transformed into a nighttime winter wonderland in which guests and locals alike are encouraged to celebrate while enjoying classic winter activities. Visit the Viking Ghost Ship, take a ride down the Viking sledding hill, hop on a snowbike (yep, a snowbike!), savor some s'mores and hot chocolate by the bonfire and donn some ice skates for a twirl on Rayburn’s pond. Guests can warm up inside The Tent where you’ll find fun activities and entertainment.
